Few rulers have left a mark on history as lasting as Ramses II, often called Ramses the Great. Reigning from 1279 to 1213 BC during Egypt's New Kingdom, he ruled for more than 66 years and became one of ancient Egypt's most celebrated pharaohs. His reign was marked by military campaigns, monumental construction projects, and a period of prosperity that helped shape Egypt's enduring legacy.
One of the most famous events of Ramses II's reign was the Battle of Kadesh against the Hittite Empire. Although the outcome was likely a stalemate, it eventually led to one of the world's earliest known peace treaties, highlighting Ramses' role as both a military leader and diplomat.
Ramses II is perhaps best remembered for his incredible building projects. He commissioned or expanded temples, statues, and monuments throughout Egypt, including the magnificent temples of Abu Simbel, his mortuary temple, the Ramesseum, and additions to the temples at Karnak and Luxor. These monuments were designed to honor the gods while ensuring his own legacy would endure for generations.
His beloved Great Royal Wife, Queen Nefertari, was honored with a temple beside his own at Abu Simbel, a rare tribute in ancient Egypt. Her beautifully decorated tomb in the Valley of the Queens remains one of the finest examples of ancient Egyptian art.
Ramses II ruled into his nineties an extraordinary lifespan for the ancient world—and is believed to have fathered more than 100 children. After his death, his mummy was hidden with other royal mummies to protect it from tomb robbers before being rediscovered in 1881. Today, it provides historians with valuable insights into the life of one of Egypt's greatest rulers.
More than 3,200 years later, Ramses II's colossal statues, towering temples, and countless inscriptions continue to inspire visitors from around the world. His remarkable achievements have secured his place as one of history's most iconic pharaohs, and his monuments remain among Egypt's most treasured archaeological wonders.
