Built in 1400 BCE, this temple stands on the east side of the Nile in the city of Luxor, in southern Egypt. It was constructed over the course of hundreds of years, starting with the reign of Amenhotep III and continuing through Ramses II, Tutankhamun and extending into the Roman era. The entrance was originally marked by two obelisks, but only one remains, the other was given to France and is now in Paris. Inside the temple are fantastic statues and a central atrium of columns 52 feet (16 meters) tall. The temple became overrun with sand, and was restored to it's current condition in 1960. Not knowing what lay under the sand, a mosque was built over the temple, and remains active to this day. The world famous "Avenue of the Sphinxes" connects Luxor Temple to Karnak Temple, 1.7 miles (2.7 km) away. Illuminated and open to the public at night, this magnificent road and temple evokes glorious images of what it must have been like thousands of years ago when it was active in all its glory.
