Unveiling the Past: A Visit to the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo

Nestled in the shadow of the Great Pyramids of Giza, the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is more than just a museum — it’s a portal through time. After years of anticipation, the GEM has become a must-visit destination for anyone drawn to the rich tapestry of ancient Egyptian civilization. On a recent trip to Cairo, we had the chance to explore this incredible space.
From the moment you approach the museum, its scale is awe-inspiring. Spanning nearly 500,000 square meters, the architecture blends modern design with nods to Egypt’s storied past. The entrance is grand yet welcoming, and stepping inside feels like a temple dedicated to human history.

One of the first sights that greets visitors is the colossal statue of Ramses II, which stands proudly in the museum’s atrium. It’s the perfect introduction to the scale and ambition of the collection housed within.

The GEM boasts the world’s largest collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts, with over 100,000 pieces — many of which are being displayed for the first time. The complete Tutankhamun collection is still at the Cairo Museum, but it is set to move to the new museum in the coming years. Walking through the halls, I encountered beautifully preserved statues, intricately painted coffins, and everyday items that offered glimpses into life along the Nile thousands of years ago. The museum's layout follows a chronological flow, allowing visitors to journey from prehistory through the Greco-Roman era.

The museum isn’t just about ancient objects; it’s a cultural hub. There are cafes, a cinema, gift shops featuring Egyptian artisans, and even spaces for live performances and lectures. Its location near the pyramids also makes it easy to combine a museum visit with a tour of the Giza Plateau. Whether you're a history buff, an art lover, or simply curious about Egypt’s past, a visit to the GEM is an unforgettable experience.
It was just announced that the Grand Egyptian Museum will open to the public on July 6th 2025.
